The problem of a gap between science and humanities has been known
for some time (see C. P. Snow or the weekly essay in "Nature").
Much has been done to overcome it - with limited success, perhaps
because most of it was symptom therapy, superficial public relations.
Interdisciplinary activism which usually ends at the lowest common
level certainly is not the solution.
Also, it makes no sense, for instance, to try to improve the image
of the sciences by sacrificing curiosity driven fundamental research
in favor of some trendy research topics that everybody seems to
understand. This is very popular among politicians.
