  • «cogito-Laureates-Symposium» on the topic „boundaries"

    Saturday, September 7, 2013
    University Zurich, KOL 201
Since the year 2002 the cogito foundation has conferred the «cogito-Award» six times to persons whose work fulfills the goals of the foundation particularly well. The «cogito award» in the amount of CHF 50’000.- is awarded bi-annually. We succeeded in uniting these laureates for a symposium (in German only) to deliberate on the topic "boundaries". This is a many-faceted topic. It has at least three meanings:
Frontiers: The confine between the known and the unknown, between the old and the new - the place for pioneers.
Borders: Boundaries between areas, domains, territories that need constant scrutiny. Are they useful or obtrusive? May they, should they be overcome?
Limits: the absolute confines. The limits of what is possible, the limits of knowledge. Scientific research inevitably encounters one of these boundaries. Each of the laureates reflected on this topic from his point of view. The discussion that followed intensified the dispute and revealed various approaches on how to come up to boundaries, and how to overcome them.

  • «cogito-Award 2004» award ceremony for Alex Kacelnik and Ernst Fehr

    Wednesday, Ocober 20, 2004, 4.15 pm
    University Zurich, KOL 201
This year's cogito-prize, was jointly awarded to Professor Alex Kacelnik of the University of Oxford and Professor Ernst Fehr of the University of Zurich at an award celebration at the University of Zurich on October 20, 2004. The cogito foundation, which strives to stimulate the dialogue between researchers in the humanities and natural sciences, thus honours their contribution in furthering the collaboration between the scientific cultures. The president of the cogito foundation pointed out that the cogito prize was created to encourage and distinguish persons who break the bonds of their own discipline in their research. The cogito laureates should become role models for future generations of scientist and show them how deeper insights can be gained by looking at scientific questions from various perspectives.
